A brief History of Ju-Jitsu

Ju-Jitsu originated on the battlefields of ancient Japan and is the system from which the present day martial arts of judo, karate and aikido have developed. After being somewhat neglected for many years it is now a very popular discipline and is found by many to be the ideal combination of defence skills and fitness training.
Originating in Japan the techniques of Ju-Jitsu, many of which had existed for centuries before the term was coined, are generally considered to have been organised into an identifiable system by Hisamori Takenouchi founder of the Takenouch Ryu in 1532. This school of martial arts tends to be considered as the homogenous source of Ju-Jitsu techniques.
There are many other Ryu (schools) specialising in numerous combat systems emphasising different elements of the art. Therefore, Ju-Jitsu came to include the techniques of punching kicking, throwing, holding, locking, choking and trying as well as the use of certain weapons.
The name of Ju-Jitsu is taken from the two Kanjii characters ju and jutsu. The character Jutsu means method of art while the first character is usually translated as gentleness, pliability or flexibility.
The techniques of Ju-Jitsu were based on abstract Taoist philosophical concepts which had originated in China from which the basic principal was formed 'flexibility masters hardness'. This was expanded to become 'softness can overcome hardness' and 'in yielding there is strength'. The basic underlying principle of all Ju-Jitsu techniques is that force should not be directly opposed but rather given away to and redirected.
