Questions & Answers

Q. Will I get hurt?
A. Obviously, as with any Martial Art there is some risk of injury, but this is no more than any other physical sport such as Football. All our instructors are fully trained to ensure that any techniques you are taught will not cause an injury; in addition from the very beginning you will be taught how to avoid injury by learning how to fall properly.

Q. Do I need to be fit?
A. It is not essential as part of the lesson includes fitness work such as circuit training so your fitness will improve the more you train; however if you have not taken part in any physical exercise for a long time we recommend you consult your doctor for advice.

Q. Do I have to pay a joining fee?
A. There is no membership or joining fee, however you will be required to purchase your license , this is essential as without it you will not be covered by the clubs insurance and you will not be able to take any grading’s. Aside from the first lesson we will not allow students who do not have or has not applied for a license.

Q. Do I need a suit?
A. For your first lessons a pair of track-suit bottoms and a T-shirt are fine but if you wish to continue training you will soon realise that a suit (‘gi’) is essential. These can be bought through the club at cost price for about GBP20-25

Q. Can I participate in competitions?
A. Unfortunately the club does not participate in competitions. The specific training that would be required to make our students competitive in competitions would be at the expense of time to help develop our students to help progress through their syllabus.

Q. What will it cost me?
A. Aside from the annual license fee the monthly fees are £26.5 for junior students and £36.5 for adults per calendar month. This covers the cost of hiring the hall and also subsidises the cost of your belt grading’s; incidentally all of our instructors give their services on a voluntary basis.

Q. Are there any age limits?
A. We currently have children from the age of 6 to adults of any age.
